Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA)
AFWA is the primary user of DMSP satellite data. AFWA receives, processes, and disseminates meteorological and environmental data required to support DOD and other national-level activities (below). Within AFWA, the DMSP satellite datastream is received by Data Reconstruction System (DRS) at Site III fed into the Satellite Data Handling System Ingest Subsystem (SDHS-IS). The SDHS-IS delivers formatted DMSP data to SDHS’s Central Data Base (CDB). The SDHS CDB systems process the Stored Data Smooth (SDS) DMSP data into the Satellite Global Data Base (SGDB) and forwards the SGDB image data to other external systems and customers. Furthermore, the SDHS systems also process DMSP, SGDB, and other satellite and conventional weather data to produce weather/environmental products that are forwarded to external customers. One of the major AFWA internal consumers of DMSP imagery/data is the Cloud Depiction and Forecast System II (CDFS II)at AFWA. The SDHS-IS provides the DMSP SDS data to CDFSII via a real-time customer system-to-system interface utilizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) infrastructure and messaging services.
Site III operators can schedule, route, and process DMSP and TIROS data through the DRS using automated procedures. The operator interacts with SDHS-IS to configure the flow of data through the data capture, data display, data formatting equipment, and routing to external systems. The data are captured on fully redundant ingest processors outfitted with custom universal software downloadable decom cards to format the incoming data according to AFWA’s system and customers needs. |
