DMSP Mission Statement:
"Provide timely and accurate worldwide environmental data to DoD and national program users."

DMSP Vision Statement:
"Be the DoD's premier provider of woldwide terrestrial and space environmental data."

The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) is a Department of Defense(DoD) program run by the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC). The DMSP program designs, builds, launches, and maintains several near polar orbiting, sun synchronous satellites monitoring the meteorological, oceanographic, and solar-terrestrial physics environments.

The DMSP satellites "see" such environmental features as clouds, bodies of water, snow, fire, and pollution in the visual and infrared spectra. The data can be used to determine cloud type and height, land and surface water temperatures, water currents, ocean surface features, ice, and snow. DMSP data is processed on the ground, interpreted by meteorologists, and ultimately used in planning and conducting U.S. military operations worldwide.
